Connection recession
THAT'S IT - 2020 has come to an end. What could await us in 2021? How have your business and personal plans changed due to the pandemic and COVID-19 procedures? I know a lot of us are ready to hop on a plane right about now....
What changes have your patients had to make? Weddings have been delayed indefinitely, perhaps there's a surprise "quarantine baby" on the way, or maybe we've had to say goodbye to someone very near and dear without the closure of a funeral or celebration of life. I wonder, is it easier to connect with your patients on a more personal level due to the pandemic? As a general population, are we becoming more empathetic, or less so? It's interesting to hear stories about adaptation from DCs, NDs and their patients across the country. Some haven't felt the crunch, others are making some major changes to their businesses. From our story on page 20, Erik Klein quotes one particular chiropractor:
"Ultimately, I'm leaving to be done with self-employment and all the other 'BS' that comes with employing myself and other people, taking my work home, accruing a bunch of tax debt, never knowing what next week or mondi is going to look like financially. And ultimately working towards being home more."
We've all heard someone say (or perhaps we've said it ourselves): "This is one for the history books." Let's hope there will be tales told of resilience and adaptation, and not of distress. If we need to pivot, we pivot - were-work our plans depending on our new environment. One particular point our readership can be proud of is the unique connection you can provide your patients. Some of your patients are severely isolated, or out of work, feeling low. Perhaps their check-up appointment or treatment time is one of the rarer times to connect or feel safe with a healthcare professional, or just another human in general. DCs and NDs are quite very rarely "cold" or "distant." At least, that's my personal experience, as well as the experiences of my close peers, friends and family. Let's celebrate that. Let's pick the positive.
For our readers, we hope for a safe and loving holiday season.
Best,
