UPFRONT | From the editor No time like the present Practice what you preach. I’ve been thinking recently that I should probably start following this advice. All day, of almost every day, my inbox is flooded with health news, fitness research, and advice for dealing with stress – most of which I share with all of our readers on social media, in our once-weekly e-newsletter (visit cndoctor.ca/subscribe if you haven’t al-ready), and in the pages of this magazine. But to be honest, I haven’t been taking all of this research or advice to heart. I’m probably the least healthi-est I’ve ever been in my entire life – that’s just me being honest. I’ll blame it on the hot, sticky weather for not going out for my usual 90-minute walks. I’ll blame it on the fact that I live in a tourist town with an abundance of greasy, deep-fried food. I’ll blame it on the gyms being closed down. I’ll blame it on the virus and the stress it’s caused. Am I the only one here? Or are you seing this with your patients, too? It seems as though there are two groups during this lockdown and subsequent isolation: One group has been eating their fruits and veggies, working out like never before, and taking time to spend with their immediate families and worshipping the extra time together. Then there’s my camp – the complete opposite. They say old habits die hard, but I think the same can be said for new habits, too. As long as I’m being honest with myself, then it’s time to break the cycle and celebrate the small victories. A 30-minute walk is better than sitting all day. Spending 10 minutes on the phone with an old friend is better than ignoring a text. A yoga practice or spending time to journal is better than wallowing in self-pity. So, have you been practising what you preach? That applies to your business, too. For instance, have you been overcome with the frustrations that the virus has brought you, or have you faced your troubles head-on and focused on the small victories? After all, small things turn into bigger successes. Well, there’s no time like the present. I’ll be dusting off my yoga mat if anyone needs me...
