UPFRONT | From the editor Back to school As you may know, I’m not a chiropractor. However, I am a journalism school graduate with an interest in healthcare and a constant thirst for knowledge. The amount of health research being published has a ripple effect on law, governance of the industry, and (of course) on positive outcomes for patients. While I may be the “expert” at editing, writing and content marketing, sometimes, when it comes to scientific research, I have no idea what I’m reading. I’d say I’m “science literate,” but have no formal training on human anat-omy. That’s why I’ve enrolled in a MOOC (massive online open course) through the University of Michigan. Two to three times a week, I log in, watch lectures, and complete quizzes in a variety of formats. There’s a course on human neuroanatomy, MSK and integumentary systems, cardiovascular, urinary and respiratory syastems, and on gastrointestinal, reproductive and the endocrine systems. Now, don’t get me wrong – I won’t emerge from this course an expert, but I will walk away with a baseline of knowledge and un-derstanding of how the human body functions, which I see as a “must” in this role. Attending continuing education courses and keeping up to date with chi-ropractic and healthcare research allows chiropractors to give patients top-notch treatment and helps them lead their best (and healthiest) lives. What do you want to learn? What questions do you find yourself asking everyday? Have you made a resolution to learn more about athletics, pediat-rics, or geriatrics this year? Setting goals for continuing education need not be consumed in the “for-mal” way. Of course, CE credits must be obtained as outlined by your regu-latory body, but I’d argue “continuing education” should happen every day. That’s ultimately why Canadian Chiropractor is here to serve you. We provide articles to educate, but also to open up discussion and help you develop ideas about business outreach, give you new insights on the industy, plus highlight the movers and shakers. Peruse the pages of this month’s issue for content surrounding rehabilitation (page 14), shockwave therapy (page 26), business best practices (pages 10, 23, 24) and more. Continue educating yourself (and your patients) and keep in touch.
