UPFRONT | From the editor Being data driven ahhhhh september. “New year 2.0,” if you will. Our new year’s resolutions have long been forgotten (admit it) and some of us savour the new begin-ning that this month brings. Kids are back to school, offices end summer hours, cottages are closed and we settle back into our routines. Our brains are once again bombarded with information. One of my favourite reads this month discussed the implications of data overload, especially today. In their article on The Conversation Canada, “Managing the highs and lows of data overload,” Kyle Murray and Dominic Thomas drop some serious news: “Estimates suggest that today we take in about five times as much information as we did 25 years ago, and that we process as much data in a day – approximately 34 gigabytes – as our 15th-century ancestors would have in their lifetimes.” They go on to say that it’s dashboard configurations that can help us see trends over time, or to get a more “holistic assessment” of data, since they present data to us simultaneously. This should resonate with chiropractors: Whether it’s with your patients, your finances, or your own project manage-ment, it’s key to look at all the data you have at your fingertips to track trends over time. That’s why you’ll find articles like “Maximizing value” on page 27, where Drs. Pooley and Thomson discuss re-exams and the value they hold for patients to complete their care. Meanwhile, a properly executed written report of findings (page 22) can help you see trends overtime as it pertains to your patients and their health and mobility. Of course, our cover story is also talking about data, as we aimed to get a snapshot of the profession in Canada with our 2018 Practice Trends Survey. You can find the full story on page 14. I’d like to once again thank every one of you who completed the survey. A big congrats goes out to the winner of the Apple Watch Series 3, Alex Murray of Point Grey Chiropractic, located in Vancouver, B.C. We hope you have fun with your new gadget! Look out for your next chance to win prizes with our 2019 survey. (As always, be sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter so you’re notified of the latest events and chiropractic research news.) Coming next month, Dr. Robert Gordon will be presenting a free webinar on shockwave technology. More information can be found on page 15.
