UPFRONT | From the editor New views it’s my first foray into the world of chiropractic, and I couldn’t be more excited to join the team of Canadian Chiropractor . Prior to my appointment as editor of this industry publication, I’ve worked closely with many different health care professionals in my time spent on the consumer media side of health – including some of your colleagues, I’m sure. I knew back pain was high on the list globally in terms of ailments, but perhaps my thinking at first was a bit modest. A simple search of “back pain” on Google brings up 122 million results. Patients who suffer from chronic pain try both proven and unproven techniques looking for relief. Reading up on the current research coming out of respected journals like The Lancet, The Spine Journal and The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association , chiropractic is making waves in terms of providing evidence-based and proven pain relief. Countless case studies and first-person accounts showcase the fact that chiropractic care changes lives – quelling pain and making lives more liveable. On top of the regular pain relief content within the mainstream media, news stories based on one review in particular kept making its way into my newsfeeds and inboxes: The three-part global review on low back pain published in The Lancet . (Turn to page 8 for an overview with commentary). The review highlights the scarcity of research into the prevention of low back pain and draws attention to the inappropriately high use of imaging, opioids, spinal injections and surgery. The authors highlighted potential solutions, but stressed that further research is needed. With this coverage (and similar stories and research), it is imperative to the future of chiropractic treatment and care to seek out these oportunites and position the industry as a first-response option for those in pain. Where do you think chiropractic is headed? Feel free to reach out any time ( [email protected] ) with questions you’d like answered, or topics you want to see covered in our pages and online. Let me know about a colleague doing unique work within the industry and their community. What makes you nervous about the future of chiropractic? What makes you excited? What kinds of research are you currently reading? Let’s continue to promote and discuss the important work chiropractors do in the health care sector, and the role you all have in pain management. See you all in our next issue.
