UPFRONT | From the editor Business as usual there is something to be said for business acumen in the health-care profession, and in this highly competitive market, having both great clinical skills and strong entrepreneurial sense is vital. Health care trends in Canada indicate growth in primary care services over the last five years, according to industry research firm IBIS World. This is primarily driven by our changing demographics, particularly the aging population. With such growth, however, comes increased competition and typically those who are able to demonstrate outstanding patient outcomes and sound business decision-making come out ahead. In this issue, our contributing writers attempt to tackle some of the aspects of business and practice development every health practitioner who owns or plans to own his or her clinic should know. Patient communication using effective marketing strategies can be beneficial in getting patients to your door, so is hiring the right associates with whom you can develop a mutually beneficial business relationship. Our cover story looks at a chain of chiropractic clinics in New Brunswick, which seems to have all the ingredients of running a successful practice -in both clinical outcomes and business aspects. At the helm of The Town Chiropractor are partners Dr. Erik Klein and Daniel Comeau – both of whom are not strangers to the magazine having been previously named one of Canadian Chiropractor’s Inspire Award recipients. Their accomplishments are recognized even beyond the chiropractic community, as Klein was recently nominated one of Atlantic Canada’s top 50 CEOs by the Atlantic Business Magazine. Perhaps the profession’s continuing education efforts would be best served with some business development courses in addition to advancing clinical skills. Networking with the local business community for best practice insights can also provide great resources for chiropractors. We know chiropractors are excellent clinicians -but how much time are you spending honing your entrepreneurial skills?
