AFFORDABLE 4-IN-1 ELECTROTHERAPY BY THE VITALITY DEPOT Vitality Depot announces the launch of their two new portable electrotherapy units, the Vitality Innovations StimTec4 and the StimTec2. These portable units can be used by chiropractors in their clinics, or on the road, and are affordable enough for pa-tients to bring home. While many Canadian DCs offer TENS therapy to patients to safely augment their treatment of various types of nerve related pain, in Canada the advantages of EMS, Microcurrent and Inter-ferential are often overlooked. EMS offers relief of muscle spasms and/or pain and helps pa-tients exercise specific muscles when conventional exercise can-not be carried out, for example, after serious injuries or surgeries. Interferential therapy uses two medium frequency currents that are crossed to augment the power of each individual chan-nel. This allows for more pain relieving power without the pain-ful side effects that can sometimes occur on the skin from using full power on a standard TENS or EMS unit. Microcurrent therapy uses an extremely low current which usually can not be felt at all (unlike the other three modalities). It is used mainly to stimulate healing in a particular area, since its output is similar to what the body produces naturally. The StimTec4 offers all four of these electrotherapies in one device. If only TENS and EMS are required, the less expensive StimTec2 is an excellent choice. Both units have been independently clinic tested for optimal CANADA’S SPORTS CHIROPRACTORS EARN ROYAL APPROVAL On June 22, The College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences (Cana-da) received royal attention. Buckingham Palace confirmed that Her Majesty has granted the college permission to use the title Royal College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences (Canada). “This is a very special honour to earn the personal approval of the Queen,” said Dr. Gregory Uchacz, President of the now Royal College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences (Canada). “This royal honour is rarely conferred, making it all the more signifi-cant to our members.” The RCCSS (C) is the national governing organization for sports chiropractors in Canada. Canada’s Governor General Michaëlle Jean recommended that Her Majesty grant the royal title to the college after it met stringent criteria, including its devotion to scientific causes and the field of sports health care in Canada. Members of the chiropractic profession and RCCSS (C) have been working with Canada’s elite athletes for over 50 years. From Olympic speed skaters to professional golfers, athletes have benefited from the expertise of sports chiropractors who specialize in preventing injury, and improving muscle and joint movement to enhance performance. Since the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, sports chiropractors have played an integral role as part of the health care team for Canada’s Olym-pic athletes. “We are very proud to support Canada’s top athletes by mak-ing it possible for them to perform at their very best,” added Uchacz. “I suppose you could now say that we are giving Cana-dian athletes the royal treatment.” Since the reign of Queen Elizabeth II began in 1952, Her Maj-esty has granted only 45 royal prefixes, making Canada’s Col-lege of Chiropractic Sports Sciences one of the few organiza-tions to earn the ”royal” distinction. CHIROPRACTIC RESEARCHERS RECEIVE AWARDS The Ontario Chiropractic Association (OCA) is proud to announce two recent award recipients, Drs. Paul Bishop and Mark Erwin, who have been recognized for excellence in research. Dr. Paul Bishop Dr. Paul Bishop has received the Outstanding Paper Award for Medical and Interventional Science granted by The Spine Journal in conjunction with the North American Spine So-ciety (NASS). The paper, soon to be published in The Spine Journal, is titled “The Chiropractic Hospital-Based Interven-tions Research Outcomes (CHIRO) Study: a randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of clinical practice guide-lines in the medical and chiropractic management of pa-tients with acute mechanical lower back pain.” Dr. Mark Erwin Dr. Mark Erwin, assistant professor in the department of sur-gery in the Faculty of Medicine, and CCRF scientist in Disc Biology at the University of Toronto, was also honoured for excellence in research. Dr. Erwin received the Hansjorg-Wyss Foundation Award. The award will go toward funding his current research project titled “A cellular and molecular strat-egy to unlock the regenerative reservoir of the notocordal cell: a novel approach to treat intervertebral disc degeneration.” Following a thorough peer review process, the award was presented in Montreal at the World Forum of Spine Research symposium where Dr. Erwin was also a presenter. Dr. Erwin is pleased to count the prestigious Hansjorg-Wyss Foundation Award among the supporters of his re-search in disc biology. Congratulations to both DCs on being recognized for their formidable work. www.canadianchiropractor.ca news new product
