Clum, the first president of Life Chiropractic College West, has recently been presented with the Golden Achievement of Chiropractic Education Award. The award was created by Foot Levelers approximately 20 years ago, and has been bestowed to only a handful of individuals who have made significant impacts to better the chiropractic profession. “This achievement award is a once-in-a-lifetime recognition of exceptional contribution and dedication to different aspects of the chiropractic profession,” said Kent S. Greenawalt, President and CEO of Foot Levelers, who presented the award to Dr. Clum. “Chiropractic is part of Dr. Clum’s DNA – live, eat, breath, sleep, do, achieve for this fine profession.” Dr. Clum’s 30 years of serving the profession as president of Life Chiropractic College West has placed him among the most senior of chiropractic college administrators in the world. His contribution to the profession has also included being president of the World Federation of Chiropractic; president of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges; board member of the International Chiropractors Association for 20 years; and executive committee member of the Foundation of Chiropractic Progress. Dr. Clum’s recent retirement as president of the College allows him to pursue other areas of interest and need in the chiropractic field. When accepting the award at Parker Seminars, Las Vegas, he noted that he is “retiring from a position, not the profession.” RS Owens and Company, the same company that produces the Oscars®, constructed the Golden Achievement of Chiropractic Education award. It stands about 18 inches high and is plated with 24K gold. “The award is 24K plated – and although it is very valuable, it is incomparable to the priceless achievements of a chiropractic champion such as Dr. Clum,” said Kent Greenawalt. • RESEARCH ‘ON THE GO’ FOR BUSY CLINICIANS AND STUDENTS Research Review Service (RRS) will be offering audio reviews to allow easier access to relevant research for busy clinicians and students. For 2011, RRS will diversify their format to include audio reviews. This new offering is in response to subscriber requests, and will allow a “research on the go” approach for busy doctors and students. Says Dr. Shawn Thistle, founder and president: “RRS will strive to responsibly and realistically connect science and practice, making research integration easier as we adapt our format to keep up with new technology or as subscriber input dictates.” Now in its fifth year, Research Review Service (RRS) has established itself as a useful ally to doctors and students who are seeking to integrate emerging research into their practice and patient care. RRS now has subscribers from around the world who log on to read weekly reviews of the latest research affecting chiropractic and its allied professions. As always, a variety of topics is covered efficiently by the RRS team of writers – all of whom have research experience and are actively involved in patient care. Their unique perspectives allow them to emphasize the clinical applications of research. Subscribers enjoy new weekly content as well as the database of over 300 existing reviews. Since the service began, the format of the weekly RRS reviews has evolved to include not only background information and pertinent results from each study, but also a critique of the research design and an enhanced focus on the real-world application of findings. Earlier this year the RRS website received a major cosmetic and functional overhaul, including the addition of a subscriber database that is publicly accessible. As well, a Facebook page, where further research information and links are posted, was also launched. Search for “Research Review Service” on Facebook. RRS also launched a new sister service for fitness professionals called RRS-Fitness. RRS-Fitness is now in its second year of operation and offers the same delivery format as the original site, covering topics related to exercise, strength and conditioning, nutrition and human performance. The web address for this service is www.fitness.researchreviewservice.com. And now, in the coming year, RRS will be creating audio reviews for even greater ease of access to timely and relevant research that can inform practice. One of the primary goals of the service, according to Dr. Thistle, is to “…demystify chiropractic and manual medicine research and allow individual practitioners to gain an appreciation of the research process, as well as a practical understanding of how emerging literature can impact how they care for their patients. RRS can help bridge the gap between the large volume of new research and those in the field who need to know about it – with the ultimate beneficiary being our patients.” For more information about RRS or RRS-Fitness, including how to subscribe, please visit the website www.researchreviewservice.com or www.fitness.researchreviewservice.com. • ECU 2011 CONVENTION The Swiss Chiropractic Association will be hosting the European Chiropractors’ Union ECU 2011 convention in Zürich from June 2-4. Zürich is best-known for being one of the biggest financial centres in the world and as a centre for cutting edge research and development. Zürich consistently places among the top three cities in the world on quality-of-life surveys and is the home of choice for many of the world’s largest multinational corporations to do both business and top technical and medical research. It is therefore a very fitting location to address the theme of this year’s convention, “Is Your Patient Getting Better?” This year’s convention will look at unbiased ways of measuring and demonstrating the effectiveness of chiropractic treatment for various conditions and injuries. A clear measure of patient improvement helps patients to see their progress over time and helps doctors develop better treatment plans. The lectures and many of the meals will all take place within the Zürich Swissotel, where a reduced price on rooms has been negotiated for those who book well in advance. With experts from all over the world hosting a great academic program, this year’s European Chiropractors’ Union convention in Zürich promises to be an enlightening and memorable experience for all who attend. For more information on this event, including program details and registration forms, please visit www.ecuconventions.com. • RESEARCH jOURNAL LAUNCHES jOINT VENTURE WITH EAC The journal Chiropractic and Osteopathy changed its name to Chiropractic and Manual Therapies in January 2011. The change reflects the expanding numbers of fields from which practitioners are submitting work regarding manual therapies. Chiropractic and Manual Therapies is a joint venture between BioMed Central and the European Academy of Chiropractic (EAC) - a subsidiary body of the European Chiropractic Union (ECU) - in association with the Chiropractic and Osteopathic College of Australasia (COCA). This online journal will continue to publish research abstracts from chiropractors but will also expand its base to include submissions from a variety of other manual therapy practitioners, as well. You can access the journal via www.chiromt.com and a link will also be available from both the EAC and ECU websites. For those in the field of research, this is an ideal opportunity to publish articles; all submitted manuscripts are reviewed by a distinguished editorial board and tracked and indexed by PubMed within days of acceptance by the editors. This open-access journal offers rapid communication of research findings around the world. It offers readers the opportunity to contact researchers via email and comment on the research. The EAC hopes that Chiropractic and Manual Therapies will prove fruitful in promoting chiropractic and manual therapy research in an inter-disciplinary platform.
