DR. SIDNEY LISSER, DC

Turn to page 12 to read his article on the importance of the first step in the patient journey.

Who are you? Doctor of Chiropractic, Lead Clinician, The Jaw and Facial Pain Centre. Associate in Dentistry, University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry and Associate Scientific Staff, Mount Sinai Hospital, Department of Dentistry, Facial Pain Clinic.

What sets you apart in your profession? I have a special interest practice solely dedicated to the treatment of oral and facial pain and their co-morbidities. I teach and most of my education is targeted towards dentists and MDs.

Where do you see the profession in the next 10 years? I hope we fall into more subspecialties in physical rehabilitation. I see chiropractors as valued members of the hospital allied health team to not only help chronic pain patients, but to assist in an emergency aspect of MSK medicine.

Why contribute to Chiropractic + Naturopathic Doctor? Collaborations in healthcare that find success with patient care should be immortalized in [media] so that patients and other practitioners who may have been skeptical of these collaborations can reference these types of media to help their patient base. In addition, showing the next generation that new concepts on practice, collaboration and dissemination of information can have unique successes, which will encourage them to take further steps forward without trepidation.

How do you engage with your patients? I like the old-fashioned way of being face-to-face so I can see their body language, reactions, and emotions. Often emails can be misinterpreted, and text or social media platforms are not secure enough to meet PHIPA.

DR. ASHLEY NELSON, ND

Turn to page 14 to read about functional medicine in chronic pain.

Who are you? Dr. Ashley Nelson, Naturopathic Doctor. I practice locally in Barrie ON, and virtually across Ontario.

What sets you apart in your profession? My interconnected focus of hormones, mental health and skincare. My work with Dr. Prouse OB/GYN has also added tremendous value my assessment, prescribing, and treatment approaches for hormonal health.

Where do you see the profession in the next 10 years? NDs continuing to grow Naturopathic evidence-based medicine, which will allow for better treatment protocols and enhanced care. I see more collaboration, communication and acceptance within health care.

Why contribute to Chiropractic + Naturopathic Doctor? I enjoy communicating my perspective on various conditions within this community, and keeping up to date with new information and research.

How do you engage with your patients? I strive to provide a space where patients feel heard and understood, and they feel they are getting answers. They should feel empowered and excited about their health care plan and their health.
