Staying strong

Welcome to the first issue of Chiropractic and Naturopathic Doctor. This edition is filled with stories of collaboration and cheerful messages of the power healthcare professionals hold when true interdisciplinary care is practised. We’re trying to focus on the “happy” during this challenging time for hands-on and complementary care providers, and for your patients.

After enjoying time with some of my closest friends at a destination wedding, I returned from sunny Panama the second week of March to a changed world. Only a few days after arriving back in Canada, non-essential services were closed and mandatory self-isolation put in place for those who recently travelled. It’s odd, isn’t it? Social distancing is in our everyday vocabulary, and for much of our population, the only “job” is to stay home and flatten the curve.

Not only am I saying “welcome” to our new publication, but I suppose I’m also saying “welcome” to our new normal, at least for now – the practical application of social distancing practices. It’s now just a part of our own private life and our business lives and for the last while, it’s been figuring out how to do that effectively.

Let’s weather this storm together while being professional and providing safe and ethical care. Everyone has had to enforce and change the way they work and the way they ask their employees to work – even the way you interact with patients. Curbside pick-ups for supplements, phone call screenings and laid-off administrators...many of you have already adjusted as best you can to provide emergency care and in the way you interact with patients. Thank you for your ability to stay strong in these times of unease.

At the time I’m writing this, there is already talk of “re-opening” services in some provinces. Now, that will not happen overnight and we will need to continue being careful – ultimately there will be new rules put in place that may not change for a while. Wearing masks, gloves, frantically sanitizing our hands, remaining six-feet apart is just the new normal for now. But never forget the value you all bring to your patients and your role in helping them live better, healthier lives.

Stay safe,
