UQTR STUDENTS WILL BRING CHIROPRACTIC TO BOLIVIA Eight fifth-year students from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) chiropractic program will be heading to Cochabamba in Bolivia in August 2013 on a chiropractic humanitarian mission under the umbrellas of Chiropratique sans Frontièrs and Eclosïon. The students are interns at the university chiropractic clinic who consider their participation in this initiative formative training as well as an inspiring experience that will give them the opportunity to share their knowledge and profit a destitute community. Bolivia is a democratic republic with a poverty rate of about 60 per cent. Bolivians are mainly involved in agriculture, forestry and fishing, although textiles manufacturing, mining and refined petroleum are also sources of income in some parts of the country. The tedious work involved in many of these occupations is a cause of the muscular and joint pain that much of the population suffers from. This quickly turns into chronic pain, affecting the society's productivity and the lifestyles of many Bolivians. Healthcare access is difficult, in Bolivia and the demand for specialists in muscle and joint pain issues is real and urgent. At present no permanent chiropractor is listed in Bolivia. Cochabamba is a very disadvantaged community in Bolivia. The presence of these students will contribute to improving the health of the local people while helping them to develop healthy living habits and invest more effort in the prevention of sickness. The mission, therefore, will include an educational component to complement the free health services that will be offered to the people of this community. Chiropratique sans frontiers (www.chiropratiquesansfrontieres. ca) is an arm of Chiropractors without Borders (CWB), a project intended to provide voluntary chiropractic care to poorer populations of developing countries, to offer spinal hygiene advice, and to support the development of local competencies. All CWB interventions are overseen by Health without Borders (HWB) along with local partners. The mission of Eclosïon (www.eclosion.ws) is to contribute to the humane development of disadvantaged countries through international cooperation and education. The organization facilitates the participation of university students in the development of the poorest world communities. This national cooperation movement helps to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Milennium Goals for the development and globalization of superior education in Canada. The students of the UQTR mission group are asking for financial support to help make their mission a success, not only for the people in Bolivia but also for Canadians who will benefit from the expertise these future chiropractors will gain from participation in this mission. For more information on the UQTR student mission, including how to contribute to the mission, please contact Stéphanie Deschênes at steph.deschenes@hotmail.com or by phone at 819-376-5212. As a tribute, Pure Encapsulations' employees wore running shoes to work and walked a miniature marathon route on business grounds. At the symbolic yellow and blue finish line, employees were encouraged to express sentiments of support to those affected by leaving messages written in chalk. The event began at noon, with a moment of silence. All contributed funds were donated directly to Boston's local chapter of the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts, and The One Fund Boston Inc., established to raise money for the victims. "We are shaken as both a company and community to see one of Boston's greatest traditions shattered by such senseless violence," said Joy Devins, vice-president of Pure Encapsulations."To honour the spirit of this event in our beloved city, we wanted to do our part to support the victims, and their families, and the first responders involved in that day's tragic events." CHIROPRACTIC UNDER THE AFRICAN SUN From April 8 to 13, the Chiropractic Association of South Africa (CASA) hosted the World Federation of Chiropractic's (WFC) 12th Biennial Congress, titled Chiropractic Under the African Sun, at the International Convention Center in Durban, South Africa. More than 750 delegates from 42 countries attended the Congress, the largest and most impressive meeting ever held in Africa. Many rated it "the best ever" chiropractic event in their lives. "This was a wonderful Congress in very, very many respects," said Dr. Bill Meeker, president, West Campus Palmer College, one of the major sponsors together with Neuromechanical Innovations and Foot Levelers. Beyond outstanding academic and social programs, there were many special celebrations and events to commemorate the Silver Anniversary of the WFC, which was formed 25 years ago in 1988. These included: A video from researchers worldwide honouring Dr. Scott Haldeman, who was retiring as chair of the WFC Research Council after 25 years of distinguished leadership. The renaming of the original research awards as the NCMIC Louis Sportelli Research Awards to honour both Dr. Sportelli for his career of leadership in building research capacity for the profession, and the NCMIC Group Inc. for its long-term funding of the main awards. From the 174 research submissions received, first and second prizes of $12,000 USD and $7,500 USD, respectively, were awarded for research papers from research teams affiliated with the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) and led by Dr. Jessica Wong and Dr. Jairus Quesnele. The launch of an illustrated history titled The Global Advance of Chiropractic: The World Federation of Chiropractic 1988-2013, authored by Dr. Reed Phillips. This history, documenting the international expansion of the chiropractic profession during the past generation, is of exceptional quality, contains over 600 images and may be purchased through the WFC's website, www.wfc.org. The presentaiton of Honour Awards for outstanding service towards the international growth of the chiropractic profession to Kent Greenawalt, CEO, Foot Levelers, USA; Dr. Jean Moss, president, CMCC, Canada; and Dr. Anthony Metcalfe of the U.K., a pastpresident of the British Chiropractic Association, the European Chiropractors' Union (ECU) and the WFC. One important goal of holding this WFC Congress in Africa was the formation of a regional organization to represent and advance the chiropractic profession in Africa, the only world region without such a regional organization. That was achieved with the formation of the African Chiropractic Federation (ACF) at the WFC Assembly by chiropractic delegates from 13 nations - Botswana, Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The first ACF seminar meeting is to be held in Nairobi, Kenya, from April 3 to 5, 2014, hosted by the Chiropractic Association of Kenya. "Our Silver Anniversary Congress was such a success because of many partners and individuals," said WFC president Dr. Dennis Richards of Australia, "but none more so that the members of the CASA Local Planning Committee led by Dr. Caileen Walker and Dr. Reg Engelbrecht. The WFC and everyone who attended this historic meeting are greatly indebted to them." Special thanks are also due to many exhibitors and sponsors, led by Platinum Sponsor Neuromechanical Innovations (Dr. Christopher Colloca, president). Many of these donated prizes to a fundraising raffle, which raised over $5,000 to support the inspirational work of Sister Brigitte Yengo, DC, MD, at her orphanage at Brazzaville in the Congo (www.SisterYengosChildren.org). The next WFC Congress is to be held in Athens, Greece, from May 14 to 16, 2015, together with the annual convention of the ECU and hosted by the Hellenic Chiropractic Association. WFC member associations in the Asia and Pacific Regions are being invited to bid to host the 2017 Congress.
